I saw Bright Star yesterday. Late afternoon.
It was a very hot day in Miami; it’s still full summer here in South Florida.
But I had the privilege of being transported to Hampstead, near London, early 19th century. Thanks to Jane Campion, one of my all times favorite movie directors. She has such a light hand, such a way to show long close ups overflowing with emotions. It’s heartbreaking and marvelous at the same time.
The movie is about John Keats and his relationship with Fanny Brawne. They met when they both live in Hampstead; she was 18 and he was 23. They became secretly engaged, because he didn’t have any money and couldn’t take a wife. Also, he was already ill with tuberculosis. His mother and his brother had already died of the same disease.
His friends sent him to Italy in the fall of 1820, because the doctors said he wouldn’t survive another English winter. He died in Rome, in February of 1821. He was 25 years old and after his death became one of the most important poets of the English language.
Fanny married Louis Lindon in 1833, had three children, and died at the age of 65.

One more thing: The colors were gorgeous in the movie. And Fanny’s clothes! The character liked to sew (I don’t know if this was true in real life). She made the most delicious dresses for herself, absolutely unique.

Mais uma coisa: as cores no filme são maravilhosas. E as roupas da Fanny! O personagem gosta de costurar (não sei se isso era verdade na vida real da Fanny). Ela fazia os vestidos mais deliciosos, absolutamente únicos.

Premier Silvio Berlusconi is still talking about President Barack Obama’s “tan,” and this time the gaffe-prone Italian leader has made a wisecrack about Michelle Obama’s skin color as well.
Berlusconi told a Milan rally of conservative supporters on Sunday that he was bringing greetings from the United States from “What’s his name? Some tanned guy. Ah, Barack Obama!”
Shortly after Obama’s election in November 2008, Berlusconi raised eyebrows by saying the victor was “young, handsome, and even has a good tan.”
This time, Berlusconi, a billionaire media mogul who began his career as a cruise ship entertainer, also took a jab at the First Lady.
”You won’t believe it,” he said, “but two of them went to the beach because the wife is also tanned.”
My two cents: Berlusconi is a rude and awful man, and I could say that Italy deserves better, but a longtime ago I realized that countries – and their people – have exactly what they choose and deserve.

Berlusconi falou no domingo em um rally de conservadores que o apóiam que estava trazendo saudações dos Estados Unidos de “qual é o nome dele? Um cara bronzeado. Ah, Barack Obama”. 
Logo depois a eleição de Obama em novembro de 2008, Berlusconi causou espanto ao dizer que o vitorioso era “jovem, bonito, e até tem um bom bronzeado”.
Dessa vez Berlusconi, um empresário bilionário de mídia que começou sua carreira como artista em navios de cruzeiro, também deu uma cutucada na Primeira Dama.
“Vocês não vão acreditar”, ele disse, “mas os dois foram para a praia, porque a esposa também estava bronzeada”.
Minha modesta opinião: Berlusconi é um homem grosso e horrível, e eu podia dizer que a Itália merecia alguém melhor, mas faz muito tempo que descobri que os países – e seus povos – tem exatamente o que escolhem e merecem.
