Alexander McCall Smith is a British writer, born in Zimbabwe in 1948. He’s a professor of Medical Law at the University of Edinburgh. He wrote a series of books called The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency. They are incredibly entertaining and quite different; the detective is a middle age woman detective from Botswana. Her name is Mma Precious Ramotswe and she is one hell of a character. Reading these books is an immersion on Botswana life, its way of talking, its costumes, etc. Mma Ramotswe is smart, she loves her country, misses her “late” (dead) father and has a talent to solve other people’s problems. She is what she calls “traditionally built”, meaning she is quite overweight. She drives an old van that her husband, who owns a garage, fixes all the time, because she refuses to buy a new car. Her secretary, Mma Makutsi, is also an equally interesting character. They solve crimes in very peculiar ways.
I’ve read all the books (the series has 10 books) and I eagerly wait for the new one that McCall Smith writes every year. Now HBO has premiered yesterday (here in the US) a TV series. I was a little bit apprehensive, because when you like a character that much it’s always depressing when they do it wrong. But they did a great job: Mma Ramotswe lives!

Ele escreveu uma série de livros chamada Agência No. 1 de Mulheres Detetives. Eles são incrivelmente deliciosos e bem diferentes; a detetive é uma mulher de meia idade de Botsuana. Seu nome é Mma Precious Ramotswe e ela é um personagem e tanto. É uma imersão na vida de Botsuana, o jeito de falar, os costumes,etc. Mma Ramotswe é inteligente, ela adora seu país, sente saudades do seu pai que morreu e tem talento prá resolver os problemas das outras pessoas. Ela é o que chama de “formas tradicionais”, querendo dizer que é bem acima do pêso. Ela dirige uma perua velha que seu marido, que é dono de uma oficina, conserta sem parar, porque ela se recusa a comprar um carro novo. Sua secretária, Mma Makutsi, é um personagem igualmente interessante. Elas solucionam crimes de maneiras bem peculiares.
Eu li todos os livros (a série tem 10 livros) e espero ansiosamente pelo livro novo que McCall Smith lança todos os anos. Agora a HBO estreou ontem (aqui nos EUA) uma série de TV. Eu tava com um pouco de mêdo, porque quando se gosta tanto de um personagem é sempre deprimente quando o fazem errado. Mas eles fizeram super bem: Mma Ramotswe sobreviveu com honras!

Impressionism is a play by Michael Jacobs. It’s not a great play, it has a quite silly plot and an expectable ending. It’s the story of a gallery owner who doesn’t like to sell the pictures in her gallery and of a news photographer who got too attached to a little African boy who dies. He visits her gallery one day and he begins working at her gallery (there is not a good explanation for this in the play). There are some flashbacks that help explain the characters and their circumstances – that was a nice tool. In the end they discover that they are in love, oh what a surprise…
What made it worth while was the acting. Jeremy Irons, looking exceptionally good for 60 years old, quite handsome and fit and charming. And that voice, plus the most beautiful English in the planet. Everything you hope in a good actor: timing, posture, voice, comfortable in the stage. Marsha Mason, more at home would be impossible. A strong presence. One actor that I have never heard of, André De Shields, excellent. He has an impressive curriculum and he’s really, really good.
But who was absolutely amazing was Joan Allen. Jeremy Irons was a supporting actor comparing to her. She is brilliant; you can feel that she likes what she’s doing, and that she is superbly good at it. And how gorgeous is she? Much more beautiful in person than in the screen. Impossible body, a neck that is two feet long, splendid skin – and she is my age, what was quite depressing.
I just wish that they were doing a first rate play, with a good screenplay and some depth. That would be something.

Impressionism é uma peça de Michael Jacobs. Não é uma peça ótima, tem um enredo bem bobo e um final previsível. É a estória de uma dona de galeria que não gosta de vender os quadros da sua galeria e de um jornalista fotográfico que se apegou demais a um menino africano que morreu. Ele visita a galeria um belo dia e começa a trabalhar lá (não há uma boa explicação para isso na peça). Tem alguns flashbacks que ajudam a explicar os personagens e suas circunstâncias – isso foi usado de maneira legal. No final eles descobrem que estão apaixonados, ai que surpresa… O que fez com que valesse a pena foram os atores. Jeremy Irons, absolutamente incrível para quem tem 60 anos, bem bonito e em forma e charmoso. E aquela voz, mais o inglês mais bonito do planeta. Tudo o que você espera em um bom ator: bom “timing”, postura, voz, confortável no palco. Marsha Mason, mais em casa impossível. Uma presença forte. Um ator do qual eu nunca tinha ouvido falar, André De Shields, excelente. Ele tem um currículo impressionante e é muito bom. Mas quem foi realmente incrível foi a Joan Allen. Jeremy Irons virou um ator coadjuvante perto dela. Ela é brilhante; dá prá sentir que ela gosta do que faz e que ela é espetacularmente boa nisso. E como ela é bonita! Muita mais bonita ao vivo do que na tela. Um corpo perfeito, um pescoço de 2 metros, pele esplêndida – e ela tem a minha idade, o que foi bem depressivo. Eu só queria que eles estivessem fazendo uma peça de primeira categoria, com um bom script e alguma profundidade. Isso ia ser realmente inesquecível.
